Lead

Over the centuries lead's unique properties have been harnessed in countless ways.  Lead is still one of the most widely used and versatile materials in existence.

The properties of lead make it ideal for:

  • weatherproofing buildings
  • radiation shielding in cathode ray tubes, the nuclear industry and in hospitals
  • addition to glass to make leaded crystal

The most important use of lead today is in the lead-acid battery

  • to start our cars and other vehicles
  • to power electric vehicles
  • to provide emergency power

Lead boasts one of the highest recycling rates of any material

  • Over 90% of lead goes into recyclable products
  • Lead is repeatedly recyclable
  • Over 60% of world production in 2002 was recycled lead
  • Around 70% of European production in 2002 was recycled lead

The qualities of lead are unrivalled and it is irreplaceable in many of its uses.  Lead will be needed as much in the future as it has been in the past.

Lead Development Association International represents companies and associations concerned with the safe production, use, disposal and recycling of lead and lead products.
